Dirt Pudding with Cheesecake and Gluten-Free Versions

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE my Mother-in-law's cooking? This week I got her mother's recipe for "Dirt". I'm calling it "Dirt Pudding", but it's somewhere between a pudding and a cheesecake. It's AMAZING!!!

  • 2 packages of chocolate cream cookies AKA Oreos(To make a Gluten Free Recipe just replace this one ingredient with GF cookies) [If you're making the Sand Pudding, use graham crackers instead]
  • 8oz cream cheese (Softened)
  • 16oz Cool Whip
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 boxes (3.2oz) of vanilla instant pudding
  • 2 2/3 cups milk
  • Gummy Worms (Optional. NOTE: If making Gluten Free double check that your Gummy Worms are Gluten Free too)

 1. Crush the cookies either in a food processor, or like me: in a Ziploc baggie with a meat tenderizer.

2. Cover the bottom of your container with about 1/4 of the cookies. I used a cake pan. You can also make this in lined muffin tins or a lined flower pot.

 3. Mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and 1/2 (8oz) of the Cool Whip.

 4. Pour over the cookies once the mixture is smooth.

5. Spread evenly. Refrigerate for 30min.

6. Mix the vanilla pudding powder and 2 and 2/3 cups of milk. Do NOT mix the pudding according to the box directions. You want the pudding a little thicker than normal.

7. Spread the pudding evenly over the 'cheesecake' layer. Refrigerate for 30 min. [If making Sand Pudding, stop here and follow the sand pudding directions]

 8. Spread the rest of the Cool Whip evenly over the pudding.

 9. Sprinkle the rest of the cookies over the Cool Whip. Refrigerate until you're ready to serve.

 10. Top with gummy worms (I probably used more than I should have) just before you serve. Enjoy!!

Little Lady loved the gummy worms, but if you refrigerate the desert with the gummy worms then the gummy worms are a little tough to eat. With all the refrigerating between layers is dose take about 1.5 hours to make (1 hour refrigeration time and 1/2 hour prep time), so plan accordingly. Your final layers should be:

Gummy Worms
Cool Whip

I made this dessert for Meme's birthday. Lets just say it didn't last 24 hours in our house.

A fun twist to the recipe is to line a flower pot with plastic wrap and prepare it in the flower pot. Makes a cute personal treat.
